Volatility was the word of the week, as the Dow's small weekly gain was marked by extreme triple-digit point swings. Up 180 on Wednesday: Down 175 on Thursday. It's precisely the type of market in which Fast Money Men were born to trade. Next week could provide similar opportunities. With earnings news starting to slow, the economy calendar kind of light, and the markets closed on Monday, traders will be watching any development from the credit markets. Already, investors are becoming increasingly familiar with once obscure corners of the credit world. Let's be honest, when was the last time you used the term "monocline" when talking about the Dow? How often did the term "counterparty risk" enter your trading lexicon? Could auction rate securities be the new financial guarantors? Anxiety in the credit markets seems to know no limit, as each string in the fabric of the credit crisis seems to unravel. But there are always opportunities, so let's begin with next week. The big earnings news will be Wal-Mart on Tuesday. The world's biggest retailer and the country's largest employer will offer a nice snapshot of how the American consumer is spending. Could we see a scenario where a weaker economy might actually force more people, who might otherwise not shop at Wal-Mart, begin to look cheaper items there? The Fast Money will be watching. The Fast Money will also be watching HPQ's earnings on Tuesday as well. To what degree will the softening of the economy damp tech spending? Housing starts and Fed minutes will provide the market with economic news to chew on, but as with weeks past, the fate of the financial guarantors and new developments in the fixed income markets will move the tape. Before you go, a quick programming note. Fast Money will be hitting the road on February 29th, heading down to beautiful Miami. Our last road show, to San Jose, was the broadcasting event of the season. For tickets, look to our website. As always, an open market is one in which you can make money. So let's try to do that all next week. . If you have questions about The Final Trade or suggestions for Fast Money, please send an email to FastMoney@cnbc.com |
