| | OUT ON THE RIG: Janet Shamlian is live in the Gulf of Mexico, on one of Chevron's deep-sea oil rigs. With oil trading at record levels, America is abuzz with concerns about the economy, and clamoring for solutions. Janet talks about deep-sea drilling economics, the big oil perspective and the difficulties facing further expansion. | HOW "SPECULATOR" BECAME A BAD WORD: It's a label you don't want to have, even if most Americans can't tell you what it means: speculator. Speculators are being blamed for the high price of oil and are becoming stigmatized the way that hedge funds were a year ago. | AMUSEMENT ECONOMY: Herb Greenberg is live at the San Diego County Fair. Its the fifth largest fair in the country and a good indicator of the state of the economy. Herb takes the pulse of fairgoers, vendors and ride operators. High fuel prices hurt not only the ride operators, but the fair itself -- offering free school bus transportation to and from satellite free parking areas. At $12 a head, many people are attending...but not paying the $5-$10 to throw rings....and what of the grilled corn on the cob vendor? Is it even worth it for him to show up? | ALPINE STILL BOOMING: Rebecca Jarvis looks at a developing estate just 20 minutes from New York City in Alpine, NJ. One home on the estate is on the market for a cool $59 million. Its neighbor is a spec house with a $42 million asking price. In a time when housing sales are slow, one real estate mogul believes his investment will still pay off. | | | |
