Calling a bottom is tricky, and fraught with risk. They don't call it "catching a falling knife" for nothing. But we're dealing in a time of superlatives for the markets. Last week was the worst week for the Dow Jones Industrial Average in its history -- not just in points lost, but also in percentage drops. The Dow lost 1,874 points, or 18%. And that's enough to catch anybody's attention.

Some of the smartest investors I talk to say this is a golden opportunity. Now I'm not saying there's a bell ringing and this is definitely the bottom. There's still plenty of bad news that could come down the pike, and likely will. But after a selloff like we saw last week, bargain shoppers ought to feel a lot more at home in the markets today.
